GOP congressman downplays Trump's talk of a coup: "It was just a conversation"

Congressman John Curtis (R-UT 3rd district) downplayed reporting that Trump was discussing the possibility of a military coup in the Oval Office with disgraced felon Michael Flynn and conspiracy lawyer Sidney Powell.

Curtis said there’s nothing to worry about because the president was merely having a conversation.

“Well, let me just tell you, I’ve been in Congress for three years and for three years I keep hearing all these worst-case scenarios,” Curtis said on CNN. “We have to remember, it was a conversation, not a revolution. There are far more important things in front of us and I think we need to move on and tackle them.”

Curtis doubled down when given another chance to answer in a way that worthy of the office he holds and the oath he took to defend the Constitution “against all enemies foreign and domestic.”

“Listen, you’re talking about a conversation that reportedly took place,” he said. “We don’t know anything about the details and you just can’t get me all riled-up about that.”

The New York Times reported on a tense Oval Office meeting involving Michael Flynn and Sidney Powell where the idea of imposing martial law and have the military oversee a new election was discussed. White House aides present at the meeting including chief of staff Mark Meadows and White House counsel Pat Cipollone “aggressively pushed back” on the ideas that were being discussed. Cipollone reportedly told Trump that there was no constitutional authority to do what they were discussing.
