Rep. Nick LaLota (R-N.Y) called fellow New York Rep. George Santos (R) a “sociopath” on Wednesday for continuing to seek out attention amid ongoing investigation into his falsified résumé and campaign fundraising.
In an interview with ‘CNN This Morning’ LaLota said he agreed with Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah.) who told Santos before the State of the Union on Tuesday that he “ought to be embarrassed.” Romney later told reporters that Santos should not have attended the event and referred to him as a “sick puppy.”
“Mitt Romney is right on this one. He does not deserve to be in Congress,” Lalota said. “He’s all about the rhetoric. He’s all about the drama. And he’s fallen far below the standard that we all should hold ourselves to.”
“He’s a sociopath, George Santos. He looks for that attention. Even the negative attention drives him. It’s become an embarrassment and a distraction to the Republicans in the House,” LaLota added. “And every time I have to come to something like this and talk about George Santos, I can’t talk about what Republicans ought to be doing instead.”
Santos is facing investigations from federal authorities over potential campaign finance violations and an investigation from Nassau County over lies during his campaign. He is also under investigation in Brazil for alleged check fraud. On top of that, Santos was accused is facing a House Ethics investigation after a potential staffer accused him of sexual harassment while he was working in Santos’ office as a volunteer.
Several New York Republicans, including Lalota, have called for Santos’ resignation.
