Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-N.Y.) introduced a bill Friday that would make Donald Trump’s birthday a public holiday.
The Trump’s Birthday and Flag Day Holiday Establishment Act would designate June 14, which is both flag day and Trump’s birthday, as a federal holiday.
“No modern president has been more pivotal for our country than Donald J. Trump,” Tenney declared in a statement. “As both our 45th and 47th President, he is the most consequential President in modern American history, leading our country at a time of great international and domestic turmoil.”
Tenney drew parallels to existing federal holidays, stating, “Just as George Washington’s Birthday is codified as a federal holiday, this bill will add Trump’s Birthday to this list, recognizing him as the founder of America’s Golden Age.”
It is incredibly rare for a country to honor living presidents by making their birthday a federal holiday.
As Tenney noted Washington is the only other president whose birthday is celebrated this way. Presidents Day, officially named Washington’s Birthday in honor of America’s first president, is celebrated on the third Monday of February. Washington’s birthday is Feb. 22.
Still, it was first recognized as a federal holiday in 1879, almost a century after Washington’s death.
