Rep. Ashley Hinson was relentlessly booed at a town hall in Decorah, Iowa when she mentioned a crucial piece of Donald Trump’s domestic agenda.
The boos and jeers began as Hinson read her prepared remarks which included a comment about being “proud” to support Trump’s so-called ‘big, beautiful bill’ which slashes funding for Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
“I was also proud to vote for President Trump’s one big, beautiful bill, a generational precedent–,” Hinson began as the crowd broke out in boos and jeers forcing her to pause her speech.
“This bill will continue to provide tax relief for working Americans. I can’t believe you would boo tax relief for working Americans,” she added as the crowd responded with more boos, jeers and people shouting “wrong! wrong!”
The congresswoman was also booed or laughed at several times during the question-and-answer section of the town hall when she mentioned her support for Trump.
Hinson also faced tough questions from constituents including one from a voter asking about “corruption in Washington,” citing Trump administration’s decision to accept a luxury jet as a gift from Qatar and Trump’s decision to host a dinner for top buyers of his meme coin.
“There’s lots of reasons why somebody like you might be silent. You might be scared to say something. You might actually like to see the corruption. I know there are some that are making a lot of money from it,” the voter said. “Can you help me understand why you are silent about this corruption?”
“I think it’s really unfair to imply that I like to see corruption in Washington, D.C.,” Hinson answered while the crowd jeered.
“I’m here answering your questions in public because I care about transparency and accountability and doing things the right way,” she added.
Several Republicans have faced tough questions since Trump returned to office, leading Republican congressional leadership in March to advise GOP members not to hold in-person town halls.
“Rep. Hinson is not afraid to face anyone and defend her support for the Trump agenda that is going to help Iowa families, farmers, and workers,” Hinson’s spokeswoman Olivia Late said in a statement after the town hall.
