Rep. Mike Collins (R-Ga.) says now is not the “right time” to discuss gun control measures following a mass shooting at a high school in his district that left four people dead.
“They’re going to continue to push an agenda. It’s not the right agenda. In my opinion, it’s not the right time to talk about what we see out there,” Collins said in an interview on Newsmax. “We’ve got to get back to God in this country, we have really gotten away from that, from a moral standpoint. There’s a lot of issues out there, she is dead wrong to bring that up at this time. It’s just not the right time.”
The congressman was reacting to remarks Vice-President Kamala Harris made on the campaign trail calling the shooting a “senseless tragedy” and demanding action to curb gun violence.
“It’s just outrageous that every day in our country, in the United States of America, that parents have to send their children to school worried about whether or not their child will come home alive,” Harris said.
President Joe Biden also released a statement calling again for Congress to act and pass further gun control measures.
“We must ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines once again, require safe storage of firearms, enact universal background checks, and end immunity for gun manufacturers,” Biden wrote. “These measures will not bring those who were tragically killed today back, but it will help prevent more tragic gun violence from ripping more families apart.”
According to Collins, the statements after the shooting shows that the policies from the Biden administration “has nothing to do with people.”
Collins represents the district that is home to Apalachee High School where 14-year-old gunman Colt Gray killed four people and injured nearly a dozen others on Wednesday.
Collins, who is known for making inflammatory posts on social media took a more muted approach on Wednesday after the shooting, writing: “Leigh Ann and I are praying for the victims, their families, and all students at Apalachee High School in Barrow County.”
“We extend our gratitude to law enforcement for their swift action to secure the school and get the shooter in custody,” he continued. “I have spoken with Sheriff Smith and told him my team and I are available to assist in any way necessary. We will continue to monitor and provide updates as prudent.”
