Rep. Debbie Lesko (R-Ariz) said she would do anything to protect her grandchildren including “shooting them” if necessary during a speech on the House floor opposing gun control legislation.
Lesko opposed H.R. 2377, which would establish a national “red flag law,” which would allow authorities to take guns from people who they consider to be a threat to themselves and others.
“I have five grandchildren. I would do anything, anything, to protect my five grandchildren,” Lesko said. “Including, as a last resort, shooting them if I had to, to protect the lives of my grandchildren. Democrat bills that we’ve heard this week wanna take away my right, my right, to protect my grandchildren. They wanna take away the rights of law-abiding citizens to protect their own children, and grandchildren, and wives, and brothers, and sisters. This bill takes away due process from law-abiding citizens.”
As she faced backlash on Wednesday, Lesko released a statement slamming critics instead of clarifying her remarks.
“It never ceases to amaze me the lengths gun control zealots will go! They turned my speech about protecting Second Amendment rights and my right to protect my grandchildren from violent criminals into a claim I would harm my own grandchildren. Absolutely ridiculous!” Lesko said.
According to AZ Central, Lesko has used this same scenario in the past, about her grandkids during her speeches to oppose gun control legislation. Those times the story had a different ending.
While speaking out against the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act in June she said she would “do anything to protect my grandchildren including, as a last resort, shooting the killer because that’s what a grandmother does.”
Donald Trump has endorsed Lesko’s re-election bid for Arizona’s 8th congressional district. Trump called her a “Conservative Warrior,” who is “working tirelessly to secure our border, uphold the rule of law, defend our second amendment, support our military and vets, and hold the Biden Administration accountable for their absolute incompetence.”
