Rep. Mary Miller (R-Ill.) campaign said she misread prepared remarks at a rally on Saturday when she thanked Donald Trump for the Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, calling it a “historic victory for white life.”
“President Trump, on behalf of all the MAGA patriots in America. I want to thank you for the historic victory for white life in the Supreme Court yesterday,” she said while the crowd cheered.
“You can clearly see she is reading off a piece of paper, she meant to say ‘right to life,'” Miller spokesman Isaiah Wartman told NBC News.
Trump held a rally in Illinois on Saturday to support Miller who is challenging five-term Republican Rep. Rodney Davis in the newly drawn 15th Congressional District.
Miller’s campaign later released a statement blaming the media for “targeting” the lawmaker as she faced growing backlash for her remarks.
“Joe Biden doesn’t know where he is half the time and the Fake News refuses to cover it. Mary stumbles while saying “Right to Life” and the fake news vultures are out,” he said. “To suggest that she is somehow not committed to defending all life is disgusting. She has the most Pro-Life voting record in Congress and is the proud grandmother of two beautiful grandchildren with down syndrome. The fake news media is targeting Mary Miller because she is doing everything she can to stop the Democrats from allowing the massacre of babies like her grandchildren.”
Miller has made other controversial statements in the past, most notably on Jan. 6 when she said Adolf Hitler was “right on one thing.”
“Each generation has the responsibility to teach and train the next generation. You know if we win a few elections, we’re still going to be losing unless we win the hearts and minds of our children. This is the battle. Hitler was right on one thing. He said, ‘Whoever has the youth has the future.’ Our children are being propagandized,” she said.
Miller was also reading from prepared remarks at the time.
