Rep. David Joyce (R-Ohio) refused to denounce Donald Trump on Sunday when asked about the former president calling for the Constitution to be suspended.
Asked repeatedly if he would support a candidate who called for suspending the Constitution during an appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” Joyce said the GOP primary field will be crowded and it is not likely Trump will “clear out the field like he did in 2016.”
“I will support whoever the Republican nominee is,” he added.
“That’s a remarkable statement,” host George Stephanopoulos said. “You would support a candidate who has come out for suspending the Constitution?”
“He says a lot of things. You have to take him in context. And right now I have to worry about making sure is the Republican Governance Group and the Republican majority, that we make things work for the American people” Joyce said. “And I can’t be really chasing every one of these crazy statements that come out about — from any of these candidates that come out.”
“You know, he says a lot of things,” Joyce added. “But that doesn’t mean that it’s ever going to happen. So you’ve got to separate fact from fantasy. And the fantasy is that we’re going to suspend the Constitution and go backwards. We’re moving forward and we’re going to continue to move forward as a Republican majority and as a Republican conference.”
Trump announced a third bid for the White House last month and is considered to be the front runner for the Republican Party nomination for president.
In a post on his Truth Social media app on Saturday, Trump called for “all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution,” to be suspended due to what he believes was widespread fraud in the 2020 election.
