A California gubernatorial recall election candidate was issued a subpoena in the middle of a debate on Tuesday.
John Cox, the candidate who showed up at a campaign stop in Sacramento with a 1,000 pound Kodiak bear name Tag was served with a subpoena demanding the he settle an unpaid bill for $100,000.
Video of the incident shows a private investigator interrupting Cox while he was introducing himself, saying “John Cox, you’ve been served.”
According to the Sacramento Bee, Cox owes the money plus a 6% interest rate, to a Virginia-based consulting firm that worked on his failed campaign for governor of California in 2018.
Cox had contested the amount owed, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The private investigator told the Bee that Tuesday’s debate was the best place to present Cox with the subpoena since “he’s been ducking and dodging courts and not showing up. He thinks he’s above the law.”
