Rep. Tony Gonzalez (R-TX) said it feels like Elon Musk is the “prime minister” after the right-wing billionaire tanked a bipartisan spending deal last week.
Musk, the world’s wealthiest man and one of the most prominent allies of President-elect Donald Trump, drew backlash from Democrats as he played a major role in tanking a bipartisan spending agreement and bringing the government to the brink of a shutdown.
Democrats have slammed the billionaire and suggested he is calling the shots instead of Trump. Some even began referring to him as “President Musk” and to Trump as the “vice president” amid the spending chaos.
In an interview with CBS’s Face the Nation on Sunday, Gonzalez defended Musk’s role in the incoming administration.
“It’s kind of interesting, we have a president, we have a vice president, we have a [House] speaker. It feels like, as if, Elon Musk is our prime minister,” he said.
While Gonzales conceded that Musk is “unelected,” he said that the billionaire represents everyday people.
“A large part of that [Musk’s] voice is a reflection of the voice of the people,” he added.
