GOP senator backs Trump’s tariffs even though they ‘absolutely gonna cause short-term pain’ for his constituents.

Sen. Tim Sheehy (R) admitted that his constituents in Montana will be among some of the hardest hit by Donald Trump’s tariffs, but suggests he supports them anyway.

Since returning to office, Trump has imposed then suspended tariffs on imported goods from America’s biggest trading partners Canada, Mexico, China and European countries. He is scheduled to impose new tariffs this week though it is unclear what exactly that will look like.

On CNN’s The Source Monday night, host Kaitlan Collins pointed out to Sheehy that his state will be among the hardest hit if Trump follows through with his tariff threat since approximately “95% of Montana’s imported goods come from Canada, Mexico, and China.”

“There’s absolutely gonna be short-term pain,” Sheehy said, then proceeded to compare the tariffs to remodeling a house.

“If you’re gonna remodel your house to make it better in the end, it’s gonna be really annoying in the short term when your house is getting remodeled and there’s drywall dust everywhere and there’s workers in your living room,” he continued. “The reality is that remodel has gotta happen in order to make things stronger and more stable on the back end.”

Sheehy then repeated MAGA talking points, claiming that other countries have been “taking advantage of the strong American economy,” and blamed the media for contributing to the “uncertainty” about Trump’s tariffs.
