Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) called for the Trump administration to prosecute Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) for educating migrants about their rights.
“I think it sure seems like she’s violating the law,” Scott said on The Benny Show on Monday. “And if she’s done something wrong, I hope Tom Homan does his job and, you know, prosecutes her to the full extent of the law.”
Scott did not say which law he believes Ocasio-Cortez violated and Homan cannot prosecute the lawmaker since Homan, Trump’s ‘border czar,’ is not a prosecutor.
Ocasio-Cortez has been under fire from Homan since her office held a webinar explaining the tactics Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) authorities have been using to arrest illegal immigrants.
The congresswoman’s office also shared a guide instructing migrants about their rights if ICE agents show up at their door.
In an interview on Fox News, Homan said he asked the deputy attorney general to “look into” whether the congresswoman violated the law and to take appropriate action.
Ocasio-Cortez’s response was to tell Homan to read the Constitution.
“Homan has nothing. The Fourth Amendment is clear and I am well within my duties to educate people of their rights,” Ocasio-Cortez added in a later tweet. “He can threaten me with jail & call names all he wants. He’s got nothing else.”
The Fourth Amendment protects people from unreasonable searches and seizures by the government.
