GOP senator says stricter gun laws ‘not gonna happen’ after deadly mass shootings.

John Cornyn texted Manchin in hopes of recruiting him to the GOP: Report

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tx.) indicated on Wednesday that he is not open to supporting gun control legislation in the wake of deadly mass shootings across the country, including in Cornyn’s home state.

“Not gonna happen,” Cornyn wrote in response to a tweet from right-wing radio talk show host Joe Pags who claims he was told that Cornyn “is open to making gun laws more restrictive.”

Cornyn is currently working with Democrats to find a ‘bipartisan solution’ to gun violence after a mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas left 19 children and two teachers dead.

He indicated last week that he’s open to finding solutions to mass shootings, but not through gun control.

“There’s a whole list of things that we can consider, but I think particularly mental health, access to mental health treatment is high on that list,” he said, adding, “I think we need to be open to whatever, wherever the evidence leads us. I would say that this is not an excuse to infringe the Second Amendment rights of law abiding citizens doing that will do nothing to fix tragedies like this.”

Talks between Cornyn and Democrats will likely amount to nothing and it does not appear that the partisan stalemate in Congress over gun control is breaking anytime soon even though gun violence has gotten worse.

Since Uvalde, nine people were killed and several dozen were injured in multiple mass shootings over Memorial Day weekend alone, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

On Wednesday a gunman killed four people at an Oklahoma medical building.
