Hackers have stolen $2.3 million from the Wisconsin Republican Party account that was being used to help Donald Trump’s re-election efforts in the key battleground state, according to The Associated Press.
Republican party chairman, Andrew Hitt told AP, the party noticed suspicious activity on October 22 and contacted the FBI on Friday.
Hitt said the hackers were able to change the invoices from four vendors so, when the party paid them for their services, the money went to the hackers instead.
Democrats in Wisconsin raised more than twice the amount of money raised by Republicans over the past two years.
Despite falling further behind financially, days before the election the Republican National Party remains confident that their work in the state over the past four years will pay off in the end.
“The RNC never left Wisconsin after 2016, and we are confident that our ground game and the millions we are spending on TV and digital will deliver us another win there in 2020,” Republican National Committee spokesman Michael Ahrens said.
Trump won Wisconsin by fewer than 23,000 votes in 2016. Polls consistently show Joe Biden with a single digit lead. Both candidates will be in the state on Friday.
