The co-chair for former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley Iowa campaign endorsed Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris for president.
Dawn Roberts wrote in an op-ed published by the Des Moines Register that she was “at a loss” when both parties selected presidential candidates in or near their 80s as their nominees. So she decided to give Harris a closer look after President Joe Biden stepped aside and endorsed her as his replacement at the top of the Democratic ticket.
“I was impressed with how she handled herself saying that she wanted to ‘earn everyone’s support.’ She showed willingness to listen to a wider range of views to solve problems,” she wrote.
“So I am supporting Kamala Harris for president,” Roberts continued.
Roberts, the wife of late former state chair for the Republican Party of Iowa Steve Roberts, praised Harris for her “ability to unite her party immediately” and reach across the aisle to embrace new people to solve the country’s problems, citing Harris comments about possibly having a Republican in her cabinet.
“I heard her articulate that she has always brought groups of diverse individuals and opinions together to solve problems. That is a healthier and wiser way to lead,” Roberts wrote.
“It also doesn’t hurt that she (as the most qualified candidate running for president) happens to be a woman,” she added. “My husband, Steve, often questioned why the United States has never had a female president. I think the time is now and Kamala Harris is the person to lead our country into the future.”
Harris has racked up endorsements from several Republicans including former Vice-President Dick Cheney, former Rep. Liz Cheney and more than 200 former staffers who worked for George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, John McCain and Mitt Romney.
