Georgia GOP senate candidate Herschel Walker says he sends money to a lot of people when he was asked about an alleged $700 check he sent to a girlfriend to cover the cost of an abortion over a decade ago.
On Monday the Daily Beast’s Roger Sollenberger reported that a woman, who asked not to be identified, told the outlet that Walker urged her to get an abortion when she got pregnant with his child in 2009 while they were dating.
The woman provided the outlet with a $575 receipt from an abortion clinic as well as a “get well card” from Walker and an image of a $700 check signed by him.
Walker denied ever paying for an abortion in an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity.
“I never asked anyone to get an abortion. I never paid for an abortion, and it’s a lie. And I’m going to continue to fight,” Walker said. Earlier on Monday he said he will be filing a defamation lawsuit against the Daily Beast on Tuesday.
Asked about the check, Walker said: “I send money to a lot of people, and that’s what’s so funny. … God has blessed me, I want to bless others. I got into this race because I’m a Christian.”
He also said he sent out many get-well cards. However, Walker did not deny that either the card or the check came from him.
Walker is a staunch abortion opponent who believes there should be no exceptions in cases of rape, incest, or even to save the life of the mother.
