House Homeland Security chair announces retirement one day after impeaching Mayorkas.

Rep. Mark Green (R-Tenn. ) the chairman of the House Homeland Security committee announced he is retiring from Congress one day after leading the impeachment of Homeland Security secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

“At the start of the 118th Congress, I promised my constituents to pass legislation to secure our borders and hold Secretary Mayorkas accountable,” Green said in a statement. “Today, with the House having passed H.R. 2 and Secretary Mayorkas impeached, it is time for me to return home.”

Mayorkas was narrowly impeached on a 214-213 vote in the House Tuesday. He is the first cabinet official impeached since the 1870s.

However, there’s zero chance Mayorkas gets convicted in the Democratic-controlled Senate. And Green’s H.R.2 will never pass in the Senate to become law.

Green is the fourth GOP chair to announce their retirement from Congress, following Financial Services Chair Patrick McHenry (NC), Appropriations Chairwoman Kay Granger (TX) and Energy and Commerce Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA).
