House vote to approve Jan 6 commission bill.

House vote to approves Jan 6 commission.

The House on Wednesday voted to pass a bill to create a bipartisan commission to investigate the deadly January 6 Capitol riot, with some Republicans joining Democrats, defying GOP House leadership.

The bill passed in a 252-175 vote, with 35 Republicans joining all Democrats in support.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy came out in opposition of the bill on Tuesday because it does not provide enough cover to divert attention away from Donald Trump and his role in the riot. McCarthy argued that the bill “ignores the political violence that has struck American cities, a Republican Congressional baseball practice, and, most recently, the deadly attack on Capitol Police on April 2, 2021.”

The bill now heads to Senate where its fate is uncertain. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell already said he does not support it, making it harder to receive 10 Republican votes to clear the filibuster so the bill can become law.
