ICE is already $1 billion over budget and could run out of money by next month.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is running out of money amid Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

With more than three months left in the fiscal year, ICE is already $1 billion over budget and could run out of money by next month, according to Axios.

Lawmakers say ICE is wasting money and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is at risk of violating the law if it continues to spend at its current pace.

“Trump’s DHS is spending like drunken sailors,” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), the top Democrat on the DHS appropriations subcommittee said. “They are spending likely in the neighborhood of a billion dollars more at ICE than we authorized, and that’s patently illegal.”

“They cannot invent money,” Murphy continued. “They cannot print money. They don’t have the money to spend that they’re spending.”

ICE’s funding crisis comes as the agency is ramping up immigration operations under pressure from the White House to arrest at least 3,000 immigrants per day, a goal they’re still struggling to reach.

Axios noted that Trump could possibly divert funds from other agencies to ICE, but for now the administration is urging Congress to pass Trump’s massive budget bill which directs $75 billion to ICE over the next five years.

Despite massively overspending, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told Axios that under Secretary Kristi Noem “DHS is rooting out waste, fraud, abuse, and is reprioritizing appropriated dollars.”

“President Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ is critical to ensure we have the funding to secure our homeland for generations and deliver on the American people’s mandate for safety and security,” McLaughlin added.
