Illinois judge removes Trump from the ballot.

Axelrod: Donald Trump’s “life is flashing before his eyes.”

An Illinois judge has ordered Donald Trump be removed from the ballot in the state under the 14th Amendment’s insurrection clause.

Cook County Judge Tracie R. Porter ruled that Trump is ineligible to appear on the state’s March 19 primary ballot “based on engaging in insurrection on January 6, 2021.”

“The court also realizes the magnitude of this decision and its impact on the upcoming primary Illinois elections,” Porter wrote. “The Illinois State Board of Election shall remove Donald J. Trump from the ballot for the General Primary Election on March 19, 2024, or cause any votes cast for him to be suppressed.”

However, the judge stayed her ruling to give Trump’s attorneys time to appeal.

Illinois is the third state to remove Trump from the ballot under the 14th Amendment’s insurrection clause, after Maine and Colorado. But those decisions are paused pending the appeal of the Colorado case.

The U.S. Supreme Court recently heard oral arguments regarding the Colorado case, but it has not issued a ruling.
