Intruder shouted “where’s Nancy?” before attacking Pelosi’s husband with a hammer.

Paul Pelosi attacker, David DePape pleads not guilty.

The intruder who broke into Nancy Pelosi’s home early Friday morning demanded to know where the House Speaker was before attacking her husband with a hammer.

During a press conference on Friday San Francisco police Chief Bill Scott  identified the suspect as 42-year-old David Depape, who has a criminal history of elder abuse and other felonies.

Police say Depape confronted Paul Pelosi, 82, and shouted, “Where is Nancy? Where is Nancy?” before beating him with a hammer.

Officers arrested Depape at Pelosi’s home after they encountered him struggling with Paul Pelosi over a hammer.

“Our officers immediately tackled the suspect disarmed him, took him into custody, requested emergency backup and rendered medical aid,” Scott said.

Depape is charged with attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, burglary, and “several several other additional felonies”, Scott said. He is currently being held at the San Francisco County Jail.

The San Francisco Police Department in a Twitter post wrote that authorities responded to the break-in at 2:27 a.m Friday morning.

“Early this morning, an assailant broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco and violently assaulted Mr. Pelosi.” Pelosi’s spokesperson Drew Hammill said in a statement.

“The assailant is in custody and the motivation for the attack is under investigation.  Mr. Pelosi was taken to the hospital, where he is receiving excellent medical care and is expected to make a full recovery.  The Speaker was not in San Francisco at the time,” Hammill added. The Speaker was not at home at the time of the attack.

The US Capitol Police is working with the FBI and the San Francisco police department to investigate the incident.
