Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md) a member of the select House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot is teasing new evidence ahead of the committee’s public hearings starting on Thursday.
“The select committee has found evidence about a lot more than incitement here, and we’re gonna be laying out the evidence about all of the actors who were pivotal to what took place on Jan. 6,” Raskin said at a Washington Post Q&A event.
Trump was impeached by the House for incitement after his supporters stormed the Capitol to stop the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory.
Trump was later acquitted in a 57-43 vote in the Senate. Seven Republicans join all 50 Democrats in a vote to convict.
“Although, Donald Trump wasn’t convicted by the requisite two-thirds majority, but commanding majority found that he had in fact incited this insurrection,” Raskin said.
The committee is set to begin public hearings this Thursday starting at 8 p.m. Raskin says the hearing will “tell the story of a conspiracy to overturn the 2020 presidential election and block the transfer of power.”
Asked if the evidence presented will force the Justice Department to act, Raskin pointed to a ruling from District Judge David Carter who ordered John Eastman to turn over emails to the Jan. 6 committee and said in his ruling that Trump “more likely than not” committed a felony when he tried to obstruct a Congressional proceeding.
“We’re going to lay it all out there, but the prosecutors are going to have to sort it out with respect to individual defendants,” Raskin added. “And speaking just as one member of the committee, I have confidence in the ability of the Department of Justice to do their job.”
