Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) said Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pa.) is “fundamentally full of shit” for challenging President Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election in the state but not his own win.
While speaking with reporters on the second day of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Shapiro expressed confidence in Pennsylvania Democrats defending vulnerable seats while flipping a few including Perry’s 10th congressional district seat.
“I think we got a chance to beat Scott Perry,” Shapiro said. “This is a guy who literally went to the floor of the United States House of Representatives on Jan. 6 after the mob that he encouraged left the floor, and he rose to his feet and lied about Pennsylvania. And said that the ballot that returned him to Congress was lawful, but the ballot that sent Joe Biden to the White House was not.”
“He is absolutely, fundamentally full of shit” he continued. “The people of Pennsylvania know that, and I’m going to do everything in my power to defeat that guy. He is not a real patriot, and he is not someone who deserves a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. He’s offended the good people of Pennsylvania, and he’s offended me.”
Perry led the effort to try and overturn Biden’s 2020 victory in Pennsylvania by challenging the state’s electors on Jan.6, 2021 even after a violent pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol.
“When votes are accepted under unconstitutional means, without fair and equal protection for all, the only result can only be an illegitimate outcome,” Perry said on the House floor at the time. “The voters did not create this mess, but the will of the people is absolutely being subverted by the deliberate and willful actions of individuals defying their oath, the law and the Constitution.”
Perry’ phone records have also been turned over to the DOJ as part of the department’s investigation into Trump and his allies’ attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Perry’s spokesperson fired back at Shapiro in a statement claiming he’s still salty over not being selected as Kamala Harris’ running mate.
“We know Governor Shapiro is still reeling after seeing his lifelong dream of being on a presidential ticket dashed by the radical wing of his party,” Matt Beynon told The Hill in a statement. “Maybe he should mind his own house rather than slandering a decorated veteran and public servant.”
Perry is facing Democrat Janelle Stelson in November. The nonpartisan election handicapper, Cook Political Report, rates the race as ‘lean Republican’ a change in characterization from ‘likely Republican’. The shift suggest that the race will be competitive but Perry has the edge.
