Judge orders that Boulder shooting suspect remain in jail without bail.

Boulder shooting suspect to be held without bail, judge says.

The man accused of killing ten people in a Colorado supermarket was ordered to remain in jail without bail pending an assessment “to address his mental illness,” at his first court appearance on Thursday since the massacre on Monday.

Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, 21, sat in a wheelchair wearing a white paper mask and jail clothes during a three-minute hearing before Judge Thomas Mulvahill.

Defense attorney Kathryn Herold told the court, “that we cannot do anything until we are able to fully asses Mr. Alissa’s mental illness,” according to NBC News.

Alissa opened fire in a King Soopers supermarket on Monday killing 10 people, including a police officer.

The victims were, Denny Strong, 20; Neven Stanisic, 23; Rikki Olds, 25; Tralona Bartkowiak, 49; Suzanne Fountain, 59; Teri Leiker, 51; Kevin Mahoney, 61; Lynn Murray, 62; Jody Waters, 65; and Boulder police officer Eric Talley, 51.

Alissa was charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder. Boulder District Attorney Michael Dougherty told the court that more charges are likely to be filed against him within the next two weeks.

If convicted, Alissa could face a maximum penalty of life in prison without parole. Colorado abolished the death penalty a year ago.
