Vice-President Kamala Harris slammed Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL.) for suggesting that Black families were better off during the Jim Crow era of racial segregation.
Harris weighed in on Donald Trump’s potential running mates in a phone interview with Politico. Though she withheld comment on any individual prospects, she criticize Donalds, who is on Trump’s shortlist of potential picks.
“It’s sadly yet another example of somebody out of Florida trying to erase or rewrite our true history,” Harris said, referring to Gov. Ron DeSantis led effort to change Black history education in the state. “I went to Florida last July to call out what they were trying to do to replace our history with lies. And apparently there’s a never ending flow of that coming out of that state.”
While making a pitch to Black voters in Philadelphia at a Trump campaign event last week, Donalds claims Black families were more “together” during the Jim Crow era.
“You see, during Jim Crow, the Black family was together,” Donalds said at the event, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. “During Jim Crow, more Black people were not just conservative — Black people have always been conservative-minded — but more people voted conservatively.”
Trump is expected to announce his running mate at the Republican National Convention in July. His campaign has sent vetting paperwork to at least four potential candidates— Sens. J.D. Vance (Ohio), Marco Rubio (FL.), Tim Scott (S.C) and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum.
“What we know is that Donald Trump wants an enabler,” Harris told Politico of Trump’s potential VP. “The litmus test is, are they going to be absolutely loyal to Trump over country or their oath of office, or, frankly, the American people?”
