Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA.) reportedly told members of his conference in a closed door meeting that he will not run for the position again after he was ousted as speaker Tuesday.
Everybody was kind of stunned,” Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC) told reporters, according to The Hill.
It is not clear who will replace McCarthy, though some Republicans are pointing to Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA.). The GOP conference will meet next Tuesday for a candidate forum to select their pick for the job. Speaker Pro Tem Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) will be presiding.
On Tuesday, the House voted 216-210 to remove McCarthy as Speaker. Reps. Matt Gaetz (Fla.), Andy Biggs (Ariz.), Ken Buck (Colo.), Tim Burchett (Tenn.), Eli Crane (Ariz.), Bob Good (Va.), Nancy Mace (S.C.) and Matt Rosendale (Mont.) , joined with Democrats to oust him in a 216-210 vote.
