Former Republican congressman Adam Kinzinger said he now identifies more with the Democratic party than the modern day GOP.
Kinzinger stars in The Last Republican, a documentary which follows him in Congress from 2021 through 2023, and his work on the Jan. 6 select committee investigating the attack on the Capitol.
In an interview with Forbes for the film, Kinzinger reflected on how the Republican Party has changed since Trump.
“The thing that surprised me most with this, and here’s a funny thing about the last couple of years, I’ve built these new alliances, like I’ve realized I’m probably closer to a Democrat now because of how the Republican Party has changed,” he said.
“The Democrats are now the party that’s defending America’s role in the world, defending Ukraine, which I’m really passionate about,” Kinzinger continued.
Kinzinger was one of 10 House GOP lawmakers to vote to impeach Trump for his role in the Jan. 6 attack. He was also one of two House Republicans, alongside former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), to serve on the committee investigating the riot.
Kinzinger was one of several Republicans who endorsed Democratic presidential nominee Vice-President Kamala Harris in the November 2024 election. He also spoke at the Democratic National Convention ahead of the election.
