Kyrsten Sinema leaves the Democratic Party to become an independent

Sen. Kirsten Sinema (I-Ariz.) vows to never join the Republican Party ahead of her re-election bid in 2024.

In an interview with CBS’ “Face the Nation” Sinema said she is “absolutely” done with political parties.

Asked by host Margaret Brennan if she’ll ever become a Republican, the Arizona senator said both parties are “broken,” adding: “You don’t go from one broken party to another.”

Sinema left the Democratic Party last year and registered as an Independent shortly after the party held on to their majority in the upper chamber with Sen. Raphael Warnock’s win in the runoff election in Georgia.

“I’ve never fit neatly into any party box. I’ve never really tried. I don’t want to,” she said at the time. “Removing myself from the partisan structure — not only is it true to who I am and how I operate, I also think it’ll provide a place of belonging for many folks across the state and the country who also are tired of the partisanship.”

Asked about re-election in 2024 Sinema said she is focusing on her work in the Senate now and not re-election.

“I want to stay focused on the work that I’m doing. I hope folks who are here today can tell how much it matters to me to actually make progress, solve challenges, deliver results ” she said. “That is why I get up and go to work every day. I don’t get up and go to work every day so that people can say, you know, is she running again or not? That’s just not my concern.”
