Larry Elder, the leading Republican candidate in California’s recall election was forced to cut a campaign event short after he encountered an angry mob and had an egg thrown at him, abc 7 reports.
Elder who is leading in the polls to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) toured a homeless encampment in Venice on Wednesday and the people there were not happy to see him.
The people in the encampment started shouting at him telling him to leave and at one point a woman in the crowd wearing a gorilla mask threw an egg at him, narrowly missing Elder’s head. The same woman then punched a member of Elder’s staff who tried to intervene.
Police are also investigating after someone in the crowd fired a pellet gun and hit a member of Elder’s team, according to TMZ, no arrests have been made so far.
The event was cut short and Elder was escorted from the venue by his security. He later told reporters he is not concerned for his safety.
“People are angry. People are furious. People are mentally ill. This problem needs to be fixed, and Gavin Newsom has made it worse,” he said.
