Former Republican congresswoman Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) said Friday that her father former Vice-President Dick Cheney will vote for Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris in the November election.
Cheney made the announcement during an interview at the Texas Tribune Festival, according to NBC News.
“Dick Cheney will be voting for Kamala Harris,” Cheney said of her father who served under George W. Bush as his VP.
“If you think about the moment that we’re in, and you think about how serious this moment is, my dad believes and he’s said publicly that there’s never been an individual in our country who is as grave a threat to our democracy as Donald Trump is,” she added. “And that’s the moment that we’re facing.”
Dick Cheney also released a statement confirming that he is voting for Harris.
“In our nation’s 248-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump. He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him. He can never be trusted with power again,” Cheney wrote.
“As citizens, we each have a duty to put country above partisanship to defend our Constitution. That is why I will be casting my vote for Vice President Kamala Harris.”
The announcement comes days after Liz Cheney endorsed Harris during an appearance at Duke University.
“I think it is crucially important for people to recognize, not only is what I’ve just said about the danger that Trump poses something that should prevent people from voting for him, but I don’t believe that we have the luxury of writing in candidates’ names, particularly in swing states,” Cheney said Wednesday.
“As a conservative, as someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I have thought deeply about this, and because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, but I will be voting for Kamala Harris,” she added.
On Friday, Cheney also endorsed Rep. Colin Allred (D-TX) Senate bid to unseat incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz.
“We need people who are going to serve in good faith,” Cheney said. “We people who are honorable public servants, and in this race, that is Colin Allred, so I’ll be working on his behalf.”
