Rep. Mark Alford (R-MO) told federal workers who were fired from their jobs that it is a part of God’s plan for their lives.
Alford made the comments at a town hall in Belton, Missouri on Monday when confronted by angry voters upset about unelected South-African born billionaire Elon Musk’s power in the Trump administration and his moves to slash the federal workforce.
“Just because you have a government job doesn’t mean it’s a lifetime appointment like a Supreme Court,” Alford said, according to The Kansas City Star.
“So I would encourage anyone who finds themselves in this situation to realize that we are going to get this economy turning again,” he continued. There are jobs available. God has a plan and purpose for your life.”
The comment did not go over well with the audience.
“We don’t want your God!” a woman is heard shouting from the crowd in response. “Our God is Christian!” another yelled.
Ariel Mollhagen, who was recently fired from her job at the Natural Resources Conservation Service, told the St Joseph News-Press after the town hall: “This is like breaking things that were not easy to build and will not be easy to repair.”
Alford easily won re-election in November defeating his Democratic opponent by 45 points.
