Majority of Americans say Trump is a ‘dangerous dictator’

A new poll on the 100th day of Donald Trump’s presidency shows that majority of Americans believe the president is a “dangerous dictator” who poses a threat to democracy.

According to a survey by the nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI), 52% of Americans agreed with the statement that Trump “is a dangerous dictator whose power should be limited before he destroys American democracy.”

56 percent of independents agreed that Trump is a dangerous dictator along with 87% of Democrats and 17% of Republicans.

A majority of Black, Latino and Asian Americans agreed that Trump is a “dangerous dictator,” compared to 45% of white Americans.

Since returning to office Trump has moved swiftly to punish individuals and organizations, target political opponents, news organizations, former government officials, universities, international student protesters and law firms who do not align with his views.

Trump has ordered criminal probes into two former officials he accused of committing “treason” and therefore should be put to death for saying that the 2020 presidential election was safe and fair.

He also has signed a slew of executive orders which legal experts say are unconstitutional.

Trump has allegedly “disappeared” dozens of undocumented immigrants and deported migrants to a notorious mega-prison in El Salvador with no due process. One migrant sent to El Salvador is Maryland father Kilmar Abrego Garcia who the administration admitted to sending to the foreign country by mistake but has ignored court rulings, including a 9-0 Supreme Court ruling, to “facilitate” his return.

“Most Americans view Trump in dictatorial terms, and I think most Americans are concerned that American democracy is on the line,” PRRI CEO Melissa Deckman tells Axios. “It’s only been 100 days into the Trump administration, yet we’ve really seen a pushback among most Americans to the Trump agenda.”
