Majority of Americans say Trump should be charged for Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

A majority of Americans believe that former President Donald Trump should face criminal charges for his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, according to an ABC News/Ipsos poll.

58% of respondents think Trump should be charged with a crime for his role in the riot. That’s up by 6 points from before the Jan. 6 committee public hearings began. An ABC News/Washington Post poll from late April found that 52% of Americans thought that Trump should be charged.

40% of respondents in the ABC News/Ipsos poll said Trump should not be charged with a crime.

A majority of Democrats (91%) and Independents (62%) say Trump should face criminal charges over Jan. 6. Only 19% of Republicans say Trump should be charged.

The poll was conducted after the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot held its third public hearing last week. 60% of Americans think the committee is conducting a fair and impartial investigation while 38% say it is not. That is up 20 points from late April when the ABC News/Washington Post found that 40% of Americans believed the committee was conducting a fair investigation.

34% of Americans say they are following the hearings ‘very closely’ or ‘somewhat closely.’

The ABC News/Ipsos poll was conducted between June 17-18, 2022, in English and Spanish, among a random national sample of 545 adults. Results have a margin of sampling error of 4.5 points.
