The Nashville Metropolitan Council will vote to reinstate Justin Jones to the Tennessee state House after he was expelled on Thursday for participating in gun control protest on the House chamber.
NBC News reported that 23 members of the 40-seat council confirmed they will vote to reinstate Jones, while The Tennesssean reported that at least 29 members say they will send Jones back to the legislature.
Republicans in the House voted 72-25 to expel Jones and 69-26 to expel another Democrat Justin Pearson. The resolution to expel a third Democrat, Gloria Johnson failed by one vote, 65 to 30. Republicans accused all three Democratic lawmakers of breaking House rules on conduct and decorum.Â
Nashville Vice Mayor Jim Shulman scheduled a special meeting for Monday to hold an appointment vote. The process usually takes at least four weeks but Shulman said he expects the council to suspend the rules and vote in Monday’s meeting.
If more than half of the council members present at Monday’s meeting vote to reinstate Jones he could be back in the Tennessee House later that evening.
