Ten people were killed and more than 30 others injured after a man intentionally drove a pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans early on New Year’s Day.
New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said the man drove around barricades down Bourbon Street in “very intentional behavior” before opening fire on officers, according to CBS News
The suspect was shot by police and declared dead at the scene, the New Orleans Police Department said.
Two police officers who were hit by gunfire are in stable condition. A long gun with a “suppressive device” was recovered from the scene and potential explosive devices were also found at or near the scene, sources told CBS.
The FBI is now investigating the attack as an act of terrorism.
“This morning, an individual drove a car into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, killing a number of people and injuring dozens of others,” the agency said in a statement. “The subject then engaged with local law enforcement and is now deceased.
