Marco Rubio honors "historic American hero" John Lewis with a photo of Elijah Cummings.

Tributes continue to pour in for civil rights icon and Congressman John Lewis who passed away on Friday after a six months-long battle with pancreatic cancer.

One such tribute was from Florida senator Marco Rubio who wrote: “It was an honor to know & be blessed with the opportunity to serve in Congress with John Lewis a genuine & historic American hero. May the Lord grant him eternal peace.”

But, Sen. Rubio mistakenly attached a photo of himself with another black lawmaker, the late congressman from Maryland, and civil rights advocate, Elijah Cummings who died last October, instead of a photo with John Lewis. Rubio also made the photo his profile picture on Twitter.

Rubio deleted the post less than an hour later and acknowledged he “tweeted an incorrect photo”. He shared a screenshot image of himself and Rep. John Lewis at an event in Miami in 2017.

Fox News made a similar error following Congressman Cummings’ passing last year. They aired a clip of Rep. John Lewis and mistakenly identified him as Rep. Elijah Cummings. The network later apologized for the “technical snafu.”
