Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) is standing by her claim that earthquakes and eclipses are signs from God telling Americans to “repent.”
Last week, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake rocked New York City and the surrounding areas.
In the aftermath, Greene posted on X/Twitter that the earthquake and a total solar eclipse that will cross North America on Monday, are signs from God telling the country to “repent.”
“God is sending America strong signs to tell us to repent. Earthquakes and eclipses and many more things to come. I pray that our country listens,” Greene wrote.
A community note was subsequently added to Greene’s tweet, providing links to resources debunking her claim.
“There are approximately 1700 earthquakes in the US every year, about 4 a day,” the note reads. “Solar eclipses occur approximately every 18 months, and are able to be predicted well in advance.”
Greene doubled down in a statement on Sunday, citing a passage from the Bible to support her claim.
“Many have mocked and scoffed at this post and even put community notes. Jesus talked about that in Luke 12:54-56,” Greene said.
“Yes eclipses are predictable and earthquakes happen and we know when comets are passing by, however God created all of these things and uses them to be signs for those of us who believe,” she added.
