Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.) revealed on Friday that she filed articles of impeachment against Attorney General Merrick Garland for persecuting a political opponent after the FBI search warrant at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate was unsealed.
Greene claimed in her resolution that Garland’s “personal approval to seek a search warrant for the raid on the home of the 45th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, constitutes a blatant attempt to persecute a political opponent.”
On Friday, a federal judge in the Southern District of Florida unsealed documents related to the search of Mar-a-Lago after both the DOJ and attorneys for the former president agreed to do so. Trump and his allies have been calling for more transparency from the DOJ since the search on Monday.
But, in her resolution Greene claimed that Garland’s “effort to unseal the search warrant for the home of former President Donald J. Trump constitutes an attempt to intimidate, harass, and potentially disqualify a political challenger to President Joseph R. Biden, Jr.”
Articles of impeachment against Garland will most definitely fail in Congress since Democrats control both chambers.
The search warrant unsealed on Friday revealed that the FBI is investigating Trump for possible violations of the Espionage Act and other laws.
FBI agents removed 11 sets of classified documents from Mar-a-Lago during the search. Documents show that some of the materials recovered were marked as “top secret/SCI”, one of the highest levels of classification.
