Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Green has been permanently suspended from Twitter after multiple violations of the platform’s COVID-19 misinformation policy.
Greene was suspended on Sunday after she dismissed Omicron COVID infection as just sneezes, coughs, and runny noses.
She was responding to Republican Rep. Dan Crenshaw who called on President Joe Biden to increase COVID-19 testing using FEMA resources.
“No FEMA should not set up testing sites to check for Omicron sneezes, coughs, and runny noses. And we don’t need FEMA in hospitals, they should hire back all the unvaccinated HCW they fired,” Greene said. “Stop calling yourself conservative, you’re hurting our brand.”
The suspension was Greene’s fifth violation of the platform’s COVID misinformation policy. Under a strike system for violations implemented in March last year five or more strikes will result in a permanent suspension.
A Twitter spokesperson confirmed the permanent suspension to the New York Times saying, “We permanently suspended the account you referenced (@mtgreenee) for repeated violations of our Covid-19 misinformation policy. We’ve been clear that, per our strike system for this policy, we will permanently suspend accounts for repeated violations of the policy.”
However, Greene still has access to and can tweet from her official congressional account @RepMTG.
“Social media platforms can’t stop the truth from being spread far and wide,” Greene said in a statement after the ban. “Big Tech can’t stop the truth. Communist Democrats can’t stop the truth. I stand with the truth and the people. We will overcome!”
