House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) suggested that Republicans may soon launch an impeachment investigation of Joe Biden as the GOP continue their series of probes targeting the president and members of his family.
“We’ve only followed where the information has taken us. But Hannity, this is rising to the level of impeachment inquiry, which provides Congress the strongest power to get the rest of the knowledge and information needed,” McCarthy told Fox News host Sean Hannity Monday night.
“Because this president has also used something we have not seen since Richard Nixon: Use the weaponization of government to benefit his family and deny Congress the ability to have the oversight,” he added.
In response to McCarthy’s impeachment threat, the White House slammed House Republicans for failing to focus on important issues.
“Instead of focusing on the real issues Americans want us to address like continuing to lower inflation or create jobs, this is what the @HouseGOP wants to prioritize. Their eagerness to go after @POTUS regardless of the truth is seemingly bottomless,” White House spokesperson Ian Sams wrote in a tweet.
McCarthy has floated impeaching members of the Biden cabinet before, including Attorney General Merrick Garland and DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, but this is the closest he has come to making that threat against the president. The move indicates that the speaker is under increased pressure from far-right members of his conference to ramp up investigations of Biden, his administration and his family.
