House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) lost his bid for Speaker on the first ballot on Tuesday sending the race to multiple ballots for the first time in 100 years.
McCarthy fell short of the 218-vote majority needed to be elected as far-right members of the Republican conference opposed him.
McCarthy received 203 votes, as 19 Republicans chose a different candidate. Andy Biggs(Ariz.) received 10 votes, Rep. Jim Jordan (Ohio) received six votes, while Rep. Jim Banks (Ind.) former Rep. Lee Zeldin (N.Y.) and Rep. Byron Donalds (Fla.) received one vote each.
House Democrats meanwhile unanimously supported Rep. Hakeem Jeffries.
Jeffries received more votes, 212, on the first ballot than McCarthy despite being in the minority.
The speaker vote will now head to a second ballot for the first time since 1923 when Speaker Frederick Gillett (R-Mass.), won re-election on the ninth ballot.
