House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said embattled GOP Rep. George Santos (NY) will be seated on committees as he continues to face calls to resign from Congress for lying about this résumé.
“He’ll get seated on committees,” McCarthy said on Tuesday.
Santos has admitted to “embellishing” his résumé while campaigning for office last year. He is currently under investigation by federal and state prosecutors in New York to determine if his lies broke any laws. The GOP congressman is also under investigation in Brazil for check fraud.
While Republicans in New York are demanding Santos’ resignation, McCarthy said his fate should be left up to the voters. But, the House Speaker said last week that Santos will not be seated on any top committees in the House.
According to CNN, Republicans believe that it is important to seat Santos on a House committee because if they don’t, it would set a bad precedent for other lawmakers who are facing intense criticism from the media and colleagues but have not been charged with a crime.
However, several committee chairs have made it clear that they do not want Santos on their panel, sources tell CNN.
