McCarthy vows to hold Bragg and “his unprecedented abuse of power to account”

McCarthy's resolution to kick Swalwell off House Intel committee fails.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) vowed to hold Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg accountable for his “unprecedented abuse of power” after a Manhattan grand jury voted on Thursday to indict Donald Trump.

“Alvin Bragg has irreparably damaged our country in an attempt to interfere in our Presidential election,” McCarthy wrote. “As he routinely frees violent criminals to terrorize the public, he weaponized our sacred system of justice against President Donald Trump.”

“The American people will not tolerate this injustice, and the House of Representatives will hold Alvin Bragg and his unprecedented abuse of power to account,” McCarthy added.

The Manhattan grand jury voted to indict Trump in an investigation into a hush money payment he authorized to porn star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election. The exact charge or charges are not yet known.

House Republicans have jumped to Trump’s defense as Bragg’s investigation wound down and it became clear that an indictment was imminent.

Three House Republican committee chairmen sent a letter to Bragg earlier this month seeking documents and testimony about the investigation and potential indictment of Trump.

Bragg called their request “unprecedented” and “an unlawful incursion into New York’s sovereignty,” in his response.

“It is clear that Congress cannot have any legitimate legislative task relating to the oversight of local prosecutors enforcing state law,” Bragg added.
