McConnell is leaning towards convicting Trump in the Senate: Axios.

Axios is reporting that there is a better than 50-50 chance that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will vote to convict Donald Trump in an impeachment trial in the Senate.

A Republican source close to McConnell told Axios: “The Senate institutional loyalists are fomenting a counterrevolution” to Trump.

If McConnell actually follows through, it will be one of the most significant votes in America’s history by the most powerful Republican in Congress against the leader of his party.

This comes after the New York Times reported on Tuesday that McConnell told associates he believes that Trump committed impeachable offenses and he was “pleased” that the House was moving to impeach him because it would be easier to “purge Trump” from the party.

Other Republicans especially in the House are planning to join Democrats’ effort to impeach Trump. Congresswoman Liz Cheney is the highest ranking House Republican to publicly announce she will support the impeachment.

Other House Republicans like Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger, and Rep. John Katko of New York have publicly stated that they are in favor of impeaching the president.

A White House official says they expect as many as 20 or more Republicans to join the effort to impeach Donald Trump.
