The Michigan Republican Party referred to Baltimore’s mayor Brandon Scott (D), who is Black, as ‘colored’ and a communist in a post on social media.
“Another shining example of ‘colored communism’ in America,” the account wrote in a quote-tweet from Libs of TikTok account.
The comment comes days after the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed after it was hit by a massive cargo ship.
Right-wing social media accounts have blamed DEI initiatives for the bridge collapse and a prominent account even referred to Scott as “Baltimore’s DEI Mayor.”
Scott responded to the attacks in an interview with MSNBC’s Joy Reid on Wednesday.
“Black men, and young Black men in particular have been the bogeyman for those who are racist and think that only straight, wealthy White men should have a say in anything,” he said.
“We’ve been the bogeyman for them since the first day they brought us to this country. And what they mean by “DEI,” in my opinion, is duly-elected incumbent,” Scott continued. “We know what they want to say, but they don’t have the courage to say the n-word. And the fact that I don’t believe in their untruthful and wrong ideology, and I’m very proud of my heritage and who I am, and where I come from, scares them.”
It was these comments that the Michigan GOP believe makes Scott a “colored communist.”
