House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) defended Pete Hegseth saying everyone makes mistakes, amid numerous scandals that are threatening his confirmation to lead the Pentagon.
Hegseth has been accused of sexual assault, mismanaging two veterans organizations, abusing alcohol, infidelity and called a serial “abuser of women” by his own mother.
“We’ve all made mistakes in our lives, but we believe in redemption,” Johnson a self-identified devout Christian told Fox & Friends Weekend, according to a clip highlighted by Mediaite. “What Pete brings to the table is a love for the military, a great education background, a great experience set, I think he’s well-suited for the job. And he will shake up the status quo, which is why this pick is so important.”
Johnson added that he is “optimistic” about Hegseth’s chances of getting confirmed.
“I’ve talked to a number of senators personally on The Hill just over the last couple of days and it seems like the momentum’s moving the right way,” he said.
