More than 200 people are dead after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti on Saturday. Hundreds more are missing or injured.
The death toll now stands at 227, according to Haiti’s Office of Civil Protection NBC reports. Teams will be sent to the area for search and rescue missions.
The earthquake was about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) northeast of Saint-Louis-du-Sud and 10 kilometers deep, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
“The most important thing is to recover as many survivors as possible under the rubble,” said Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who declared a one-month state of emergency for the country.
Hospitals are also overwhelmed as they struggle to care for the injured with what little resources they have.
“There are a lot of people coming in — a lot of people,” an administrator at the Hopital Saint Antoine told CNN. “We don’t have enough supplies.”
The hospital has set up tents in its courtyard, the administrator said.
The initial death toll was 29 but USGS predicted it would be much higher since the damage was widespread.
The quake comes as the country is still reeling from the assassination of their president and 11 years after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake killed an estimated 300,000 people.
There may be more bad news for the country as Tropical Storm Grace is predicted to make landfall there late Monday.
