Elon Musk urged his millions of Twitter followers to support Republicans on the eve of the midterm elections, but a new report says the billionaire didn’t cast a ballot for either party in 2022.
“To independent-minded voters: Shared power curbs the worst excesses of both parties, therefore I recommend voting for a Republican Congress, given that the Presidency is Democratic,” Musk wrote on Twitter before the election.
However, state and local records obtained by the Daily Beast shows that Musk did not vote at all.
“Based on our records, we do not have any indication that Mr. Musk participated in the November 2022 Election,” the election administrator in Cameron County, Texas, where Musk is registered to vote, told The Daily Beast.
Musk could not have voted in another county because that would result in a cancellation of his registration in Cameron County, the official said, and the Texas Secretary of State’s Office confirmed that he was only registered to vote in Cameron.
The Texas Secretary of State’s Office also confirmed that Musk did not vote in the 2022 midterms.
Records show that Musk voted for Republican Mayra Flores in a special election in June for Texas’ 34th Congressional District. Flores went on to win that seat, becoming the first Democrat to do so in nearly a century.
At the time, Musk declared it was the “first time I ever voted Republican,” adding “massive red wave in 2022.”
Republicans narrowly won control of the House and lost a seat in the Senate as the red wave failed to materialize in the midterms. Flores lost her seat by more than 11,000 votes.
