Former neighbors of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito reportedly called police in 2021 over repeated harassment by the justice’s wife, Martha-Ann Alito, according to the New York Times.
The husband of Emily Baden, the Alitos former neighbor, called police on February 15, 2021 claiming they were being harassed by Mrs. Alito.
“Somebody in a position of authority needs to talk to her and make her stop,” Baden’s husband said, according to a recording of the call reviewed by The Times.
The police did not take any action based on the call, according to the report.
The call was placed after Baden exchanged words with Alito’s wife, when she put up yard signs critical of Republicans.
The Times reported earlier this month that an inverted flag, which is a symbol of the ‘Stop the Steal’ movement, was displayed at Justice Alito’s home on Jan. 17, 2021, neighbors say it was up for a few days. Alito told Fox News that his wife displayed the inverted flag at their home because she was “distraught” after a confrontation with their neighbor in which the neighbor used “vulgar language, ‘including the C-word.'”
However the report suggests that the name calling came weeks after the flag was hoisted on Jan. 17.
Baden explained that after Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election she placed a yard sign on her lawn saying, “Bye Don” on one side and Fuck Trump” on the other.
Things escalated between the neighbors since then.
President Biden’s inauguration was held three days after the Alitos hoisted the upside-down flag. They did not attend the inauguration citing COVID concerns.
Baden told The Times that she and her then-boyfriend drove past the Alito’s home on the day of Biden’s inauguration and saw Mrs. Alito in the yard. She said the Supreme Court justice’s wife ran toward their car and yelled something they couldn’t understand and appeared to spit at the vehicle.
Mrs. Alito approached the couple less than month later while she was out on a walk with her husband and called them “fascists,” the Badens said. She also used an expletive all while Justice Alito remained silent.
Baden said that’s when she “snapped” and called Mrs. Alito a “cunt.”
She does not remember her precise words, but recalls something like, “how dare you behave this way,” The Times reports. “You’ve been harassing us, over signs. You represent the highest court in the land. Shame on you.”
The Badens said they started to call police after their exchanges “had gone from uneasy to ugly” in order to document the incidents in case things escalated further.
