SiriusXM has relaunched Neil Young Radio, a satellite and streaming music channel featuring music and exclusive stories from the musician one day after Spotify agreed to remove his work because he wouldn’t share the platform with Joe Rogan, Variety reports.
“When you have an opportunity to present an iconic artist still at the height of his creativity, you don’t hesitate to do it, again,” Steve Blatter, SiriusXM Senior Vice President and General Manager, Music Programming said. “Outspoken, brave, and a true music icon, Neil Young is in a rare class of artists, and we are honored to collaborate with him to create a special audio experience for his fans.”
Neil Young Radio starts today on channel 27 for 7 days and streaming online on the SiriusXM App for a month.
The channel will include “rarities and exclusives, every new song from his latest album Barn, epic hits and fan favorites from his solo music, collaborations with Buffalo Springfield and Crosby Stills Nash & Young, plus Neil sharing the insights behind writing and recording the music.”
Even though SiriusXM host several right wing radio shows with views similar to Joe Rogan’s, Young is not able to remove his work since satellite radio is covered by a different broadcasting license than streaming services. According to Variety, a rights-holder would not be able to prevent its music from being broadcast on satellite radio, while streaming services host content at the discretion of the rights holder, which is why Young asked Warner Music to remove his work from Spotify.
“I want you to let Spotify know immediately TODAY that I want all my music off their platform. They can have [Joe] Rogan or Young. Not both,” Young wrote in a letter to Warner Music earlier this week. “I am doing this because Spotify is spreading fake information about vaccines — potentially causing death to those who believe the disinformation being spread by them.”
